Erdal İnönü (1946-2007) was a Turkish physicist, academic, and politician. He was the son of Ismet İnönü, a prominent politician and the second president of Turkey.
In the early 1970s, İnönü taught physics at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. He then pursued his PhD in physics at California Institute of Technology. He returned to Turkey in 1974 and became a faculty member at the Middle East Technical University, where he continued his research in theoretical physics.
In 1983, İnönü co-founded the Social Democratic Populist Party (SHP) with his brother Ecevit, and the party later merged with other parties to form the Social Democratic Party (DSP). İnönü served as the party's vice-chairman from 1999 to 2002 and as chairman from 2002 to 2003.
In 1993, he was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State in Tansu Çiller's coalition government. In 1995, he became the Minister of National Education and then the Minister of Culture.
İnönü died in 2007 at the age of 61 due to lung cancer. He is remembered as a prominent advocate for human rights and democracy in Turkey, as well as a respected physicist and academic.
